AfriForum launches safety guide for international visitors ahead of G20 summit
AfriForum’s Community Safety division has released a comprehensive safety guide for international visitors, journalists and delegates attending the G20 Summit in South Africa. The guide, titled Staying Safe in South Africa, equips foreign visitors with practical tools to navigate South Africa’s uniquely high-risk crime environment.
The 10-page booklet provides essential information on situational awareness, vehicle safety, accommodation precautions, financial security, and emergency procedures. It also provides an overview of South Africa’s specific crime threats such as hijackings, vehicle spiking, protest actions and airport-follow robberies.
According to AfriForum, international visitors often underestimate the level of violent and opportunistic crime in South Africa, making them highly vulnerable during their stay. The guide aims to close this information gap.
“South Africa is a beautiful destination, but the reality is that violent crime remains exceptionally high and unpredictable,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety. “Delegates attending the G20 summit will be moving across major transport routes, airports, hotels and tourist hotspots – all areas where criminals actively target those who appear unfamiliar with the environment. AfriForum’s guide empowers visitors with the knowledge they need to stay alert, make informed decisions and avoid becoming victims.”
The guide provides detailed and practical steps such as how to avoid remote roadside stops; what to do if pulled over by suspected “blue-light” criminals; how to use e-hailing services safely; and how to identify high-risk areas on major travel routes. It also includes vital emergency numbers, including AfriForum’s national control room, which will operate throughout the G20 period.
“Our goal is not to scare visitors, but to empower them,” Broodryk adds. “With the right awareness and preparation, international visitors can enjoy South Africa’s world-class attractions while staying safe throughout their stay.”
The Staying Safe in South Africa guide will be distributed to international media and will be available on AfriForum’s website.
