From roadblocks to car accidents; AfriForum’s Kempton Park neighbourhood watches help at these scenes

AfriForum’s Kempton Park neighbourhood watches assisted at six scenes this past weekend – from a tree that fell over and blocked the road to car accidents and an attack on a community member. AfriForum responded to these scenes in collaboration with various role players.

On 12 October, the AfriForum neighbourhood watches were called to the R21 on-ramp at Voortrekker Road where six men attacked a community member who was repairing a heavy motor vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital with bruises and a blow to the head. Neighbourhood watches, in collaboration with the local community policing forum and security companies, searched the area but the suspects had already fled.

On the same day, AfriForum neighbourhood watches carried out a security patrol at the Zuurfontein Cemetery to ensure that community members could visit their deceased loved ones in a safe environment. A total of 14 vehicles participated in the patrol while 38 people visited the cemetery.

Meanwhile, on 11 October, AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches were at the corner of Beukes and Stephanus Roads where a tree had fallen and blocked the road. The neighbourhood watches cordoned off the road to ensure safety and informed the community. The Municipality was informed and the tree was removed the next day.

On the same day, the AfriForum neighbourhood watches responded to several car accidents, one of which was in collaboration with P&C Safety Services, Mamba Security and First Help at the Pomona off-ramp. No one was injured. The scene was cleaned and the vehicle was removed. The neighbourhood watch was also called to an accident scene in 3rd Avenue, Bredell, involving a heavy motor vehicle. One of the vehicles drove away from the scene and is still being searched for. Neighbourhood watches assisted with traffic control and secured the scene. The Gauteng Emergency Services examined the injured patient and transported him to the nearest state hospital. Furthermore, the neighbourhood watches also helped at an accident scene on the R21 in the direction of Atlas Road. The neighbourhood watches provided security, lighting and traffic diversions. The vehicle was removed and no serious injuries were reported.

“The safety of the community remains a top priority for AfriForum and the Kempton Park neighbourhood watches have proven this,” says Nadia Olckers, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
